Summer 2022 and ministry for the future??

I have been captivated this summer by the book, ‘Ministry For The Future’, by Kim Stanley Robinson. That’s not to say I’ve rushed through it, but it is extremely relevant to the summer of 2022 that we are experiencing here in Perth. That is to say, Perth, Western Australia is smashing our records for – not only the number of days over 35 degrees Celcius (as if that wasn’t hot enough) – but the number of consecutive days over 40 degrees as well.

Traditionally, when the temperatures hit 35 and above in Perth this was a signal for ‘tools down’. At 35 degrees and above I definitely find it too hot to do meaningful work and I feel ‘I need’ air conditioning. Of course, emissions increase as a result of more of us using air conditioning, which in turn drives up the collective need for air conditioning.
